Unnecessary Touching
Even with clean hands, touching introduces bacteria and disrupts the delicate healing tissue. The best policy is to let it be.
Harsh Products
Avoid alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, and ointments. These can strip moisture and harm new skin cells. Sterile saline is the gentlest, most effective choice.
Changing Jewelry Too Soon
Healing takes time. Even if it feels fine, the tissue underneath is still delicate. Wait for your piercer’s confirmation before making a switch.
Submerging in Water
For the first few weeks, it’s best to avoid pools, hot tubs, and lakes. Standing water can introduce bacteria, and chlorine is overly drying.
Sleeping Directly on the Piercing
Consistent pressure can lead to irritation. A small adjustment to your sleep setup, like using a pillow with a center hole, makes a significant difference in comfort.
Using Cotton Swabs
Loose fibers can catch on jewelry and cause irritation. If cleansing is needed, let the shower water rinse the area gently after your saline spray.
