Your Piercing Questions Answered

How do you ensure everything is clean and safe?

Your safety is our absolute priority. We maintain the highest standards:

Every needle is single-use, opened in front of you.The jewelry and piercing post we use are singly packed and sterilized as well. Any reusable tools are sterilized in our hospital-grade autoclave (the same equipment used in medical clinics). We use hospital-grade disinfectants, and our piercers wear fresh sterile gloves for every procedure.

Is piercing safe for children?

Yes, with careful consideration. We pierce children ages five and up.

We believe it’s important to wait until a child can understand and participate in the process for their comfort and safety. If they cant sit still around needles, then it can be difficult to safely administer the piercing. A parent or guardian must be present with ID.
We recommend morning appointments when children tend to feel their best.

How much does it actually hurt?

Discomfort is brief and varies by placement, often described as a quick, concentrated sensation.

Lobes:Typically a 2/10—like a fast pinch.
Helix or Flat: Around a 4/10.
Conch or Tragus: These are thicker cartilage, so it may feel more pronounced for a second.

Tips for comfort before your appointment:

Eat a good meal 1-2 hours before.

Avoid caffeine beforehand.

We’ll guide you through a calming breathing technique during the moment itself.

Your Aftercare Questions Answered

Think of aftercare as the quiet, consistent support your new piercing needs.

"What is the aftercare routine?"

  • Clean twice daily with your complimentary NeilMed Aftercare Spray.
  • Always wash your hands before touching the area.
  • Protect your piercing while you sleep (a clean pillowcase or travel pillow helps).

Don’t:

  • Twist, pull, or play with the jewelry. The best policy is to let it be.
  • Use cotton swabs, ointments, alcohol, or hydrogen peroxide—these can irritate.
  • Pick at any natural discharge; let it rinse away gently in the shower.

"My piercing is red/swollen—is this normal?"

Some initial redness and mild swelling are common. Clear or pale discharge is part of the natural healing process.

Reach out to us if you notice any of the below:

  • Throbbing pain that increases after the first few days.
  • Yellow or green discharge.
  • Swelling that covers the jewelry.
  • Anything that simply doesn’t feel right.

"When can I change my jewelry?"

Patience ensures your piercing heals beautifully and remains comfortable.

  • First Change (Downsizing) At 6 weeks, we’ll see you for a complimentary downsize, swapping your initial longer post for a shorter, snugger fit.
  • Full Jewelry Change: Wait at least 3 months for lobes and 6 months for cartilage piercings before changing jewelry yourself.
  • Our Suggestion: For your first few changes, visit the studio. Our piercers can change it quickly and safely, ensuring your hard-earned healing isn’t disrupted.
